Moonee Valley City Council launch new mobile site

Moonee Valley City Council have just launched their new mobile site with digital agency Precedent as part of an initiative to increase communication channels and meet demand from users accessing the council’s site via mobile.

With users originally using mobile apps such as Snap Send Solve to report issues within the community, the new mobile site fully integrates into the existing Sitecore CMS which the internal team are now able to easily incorporate into their communication processes. The mobile site is helping to challenge underlying issues within the community such as graffiti, rubbish and damage, rather than solve superficial problems and also provides a two-way communication channel between the user and the council.

Precedent conducted in-depth user research to identify the key user needs and tasks via mobile which resulted in a Request or Report feature, streamlined content for mobile and a prominence of location-based information, such as finding the nearest facility.

Precedent developers utilised the mobile capabilities of the existing Sitecore CMS to provide an adaptive experience for council users. This allows internal staff to effectively manage two sites in one by providing different display options depending on the user’s device. This helped to reduce operating costs by decreasing time spent on content entry while providing a mobile friendly interface for the user.

The benefits from using this method include better site performance for mobile, extremely low impact on content entry methods while not restricting the user to mobile-only function, allowing users to view and interact with the website the same as they would on a desktop.

"We are very excited to have launched our mobile site as it’s very important to us that our community can access Council information with ease and at their convenience. The streamlined, clean design and simple navigation makes viewing our website an effortless user experience, and the link to our request application means residents can report issues to us on the spot, 24/7. We look forward to expanding on this and creating other mobile solutions into the future." Neville Smith - Chief Executive, Moonee Valley City Council

In the first few months since its launch:

  • 59% of users accessing the mobile site were new
  • 41%  of users were returning to use its functionality again
  • Nearly 30% of all online interactions with the council are now done via the mobile site
